The Nature of Soy Wax
What is the difference between soy and paraffin wax?
Soy wax is a vegetable wax made from the oil of soybeans. After harvesting, the beans are cleaned, cracked, dehulled, and rolled into flakes. The oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated. The hydrogenation process converts some of the fatty acids in the oil from unsaturated to saturated, making itsolid at room temperature. Our soy wax is made from US soybean crops that are not genetically-modifiedand are herbicide and pesticide-free.
Paraffin wax is a byproduct of petroleum refining. This wax isproduced by refining or separating the waxes out of crude mineral oils. It is commonly believed that candles made of petroleum-based paraffin waxes create more particulates in the air during combustion, as compared to natural soy wax. Also, paraffin wax is made from a non-renewable resource, where as soy wax is made from a renewable resource.

Why does soy wax pull away from the container?
Soy wax is temperature-sensitive. If you notice wet or cloudy-looking spots on the side of your glass candle, the temperature of the glass is probablycooler than the surrounding air, causing the wax to constrict and pull away from thecontainer walls. As soon as the candle is lit and the temperature of the glass increases, the wax will expand again and will completely adhere to the sides of the candle container.

Help, my candle flame keeps dimming.
We are constantly testing our wicks and candles to make sure you get the best burn possible from your soy candles. Some fragrances are thicker than others, such as Vanilla, and essential oils are thicker than mostfragrances. To reduce the chance of your candleburning improperly, you should always burn your candles until the top is completely liquefied to ensure an even, proper burn pool. This "memory" burn is very important because your soy candle will remember the burn pool width and will usually only burn to the outside of the last burn pool that was created. Burning soy candles for longer than four hours at a time is not recommended as the flame might start to dim. Keep the wick trimmed to ΒΌ inch to prevent smoking and carbon mushrooming. Re-trim the wick before every use. As a last resort, if soy candle flame starts to dim, pour out some of the excess soy wax.

How should I burn my pillars and votives?
Soy wax is a soft wax compared to other candle waxes.Because of this, soy candles that are notmade in containers, such aspillars and votives, should always be burned on proper plates and in holders.
For pillar soy candles, pillar plates that are at least an inch in diameter bigger than the pillar candle should be used, to catch any wax run off that might occur. Most of our soy pillar candles stay self-contained but depending on thescent in thecandle and temperature of yourroom, the candle can perform differently. You want to make sure that thesurface you are burning your candle on is protected, even though soywax is much easier to clean up than paraffin wax.
Votive soy candles must always be burned in a tight-fitting votive holder to allow the melting wax to be contained in a small area for the longest burn time possible.

Why does a mushroom ball appear at the top of thewick whenever I burn my candle?
It is very common to develop excessive carbon build-up or a "mushroom"at the top of a candle wick. Depending on the type of wick use and the fragrance of the candle, carbon buildup can appear on the top of the wick and can look like a mushroom-shaped ball. This mushroom ball is made from carbon deposits that have built up on the wick from the burning of the wax and fragrance. Before each burn, trim wick and cut off the "mushroom."

Is the melted soy wax from my candle safe to use as lotion on my skin?
Because all people and skin are different, we do not recommend that you use the melted soy wax oil on your skin. Although our soy candlesare made with bath-and-body-safe fragrances most of the time, there are still some fragrances and essential oils that can cause skin rashes and irritation.

What is the difference between your premium fragrance line and Aromatherapy line of products?
In general, candles made with synthetic fragrance oils tend to be more affordable than those made with essential oils and provide a much stronger aroma in candles. There are popular scents like Blueberry Muffin and Apple Cider, that can only be found in fragrance oils. These types of scents simply cannot be found naturally in essential oils. Unfortunately, manufacturers of fragrance oils do not have to disclose the ingredients used in making their fragrances, per the FDA. Many candles companies use very inexpensive, petroleum-based fragrance oils that contain a neurotoxin called phthalates. This is one of the many reasons it is important to buy soy candles from an American company with a stellar reputation for quality products and green business practices, like NaturalScents.com. We use premium, mostly bath-and-body-safe,fragrance oils to scent our Premium Scented line of soy candles.
Essential oils are much lighter in aroma but are thought to be more healthy for one's burning environment and for the planet. There are different grades of essential oils, and as with all things, the better ones tend to be more expensive, like the therapeutic-grade essential oils. In some cases, the harvesting of plant and flower materials can cause damage to the environment. This is because it can take hundreds of pounds of plant matter to produce only a single ounce of essential oil. Some materials used to create essential oils, such as Sandalwood, are now endangered from the over-harvesting, which is why we do not offer this essential oil in our aromatherapy line of products. At NaturalScents, we like to provide our customers with both options; we let you decide.

The second type we use are Green Recycled Peanuts, made from 100% post-consumer loose fill materials.
Our aluminum travel tin and tea light soy candle containers can be recycled and our glass candle containers can be recycled in some states, but can always be reused. Our Eco-Couture soy candles are packaged in gift boxes made from 100% recycled post-consumer materials. Our natural soy wax is manufactured meeting FDA and kosher standards, and comes from non-GMO, herbicide and pesticide-free organic soybean crops in the United States. Our soy candles directly support American farmers and the American economy, where as most candles on the market are made from paraffin wax (a refined petroleum product) and are made outside of the United States. All of our soy candles are proudly made in Portland, Oregon. Our soy candles contain no beeswax or animal products, making them vegetarian/vegan-friendly. Using 100% soy wax in our natural soy candles is just one way we can help reduce American dependence on foreign oil and to help support American small businesses.
We use cotton/hemp-core wicks to maximize the burn times for all of our soy candles; no lead or metal wicks are used.
